About Mary P. Mooney



Mary P. Mooney has been providing thoughtful, effective, and compassionate representation to clients based on a solid background of over 34 years of experience in legal analysis, research, and writing as well as experience in hearings and trial settings.

During that time, she has represented hundreds of clients, men and women, young and old, providing legal services in numerous proceedings throughout the metropolitan area as well as greater Minnesota including representation in divorce and family law matters, probate and estate matters, juvenile law, and residential real estate sales and purchases from both the buyer and seller perspectives.For a more complete listing of services provided, please click on Services.


Mary P. Mooney received her Juris Doctorate Degree in legal education from Hamline University School of Law in 1979. While at law school, she was a member of the Hamline Law Review and was on the Dean's List. She also served as Treasurer of the Student Bar Association and enjoyed being Captain of the annual Student-Faculty Powerpuff Football game.

Prior to entering law school, she attended the University of Minnesota Morris where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a concentration on child development. Additional areas of concentration while at college were in the fields of biology, German and theater. While at the University of Minnesota Morris, she was on the Dean's List. She was a member of the All University Senate and served as the International Study and Travel Coordinator. She was also a columnist for the student newspaper. 


During her 34 year career, Mary P. Mooney served as an Assistant County Attorney where she handled contested and uncontested juvenile proceedings regarding dependency, neglect, termination of parental rights, and delinquency as well as detention, adjudication and disposition hearings. She helped establish the first county-wide Interdisciplinary Child Abuse Team. She also handled commitment hearings and all IV-D work including proceedings regarding child support, paternity, and contempt as well as matters related to probate proceedings. She also handled various misdemeanor and felony cases. 

Mary P. Mooney has been in private practice for 31 years handling divorce and family law matters, probate proceedings, estate planning and related matters, juvenile proceedings and residential real estate sales and purchases, and other legal matters. She is a firm believer in alternative dispute resolution having received her initial training as a mediator in 1987.

She has served as a Settlement Conference Referee in Hennepin County District Court in which she assisted the parties and counsel in addressing outstanding issues, conducted settlement negotiations, issued interim orders relative to discovery matters, took testimony from the  parties, and reviewed and signed proposed divorce decrees. Ms. Mooney has also served as a Mediator for Ramsey County District Court, assisting parties and counsel in settling pending family court proceedings.
